Background:
As most toy dogs are like other toy dogs, the Papillon was a favorite of the royals in the 17th and 18th centuries. The papillon is depicted in paintings dating as early as the 15th century which caught the attention of a number of famous artists.
The Papillon was known by the name of “dwarf Spaniels” during the years before the French revolution The Papillon was a part of the lives of many famous figures like Marie Antoinette.
The Papillon was close to being extinct in the wake of the French revolution, but it made its return at the turn of the century. It was named in honor of the French word meaning Butterfly. It is not the case that all Papillons come with distinctive butterfly ears, however, the pups of the same litter may have different types of ears. This means that some may have floppy ears while others will have butterflies.

What is the Papillon look like?
Don’t be deceived by the size of a Papillion. He’s just as noisy and destructive as big boys. However, if you can give him adequate exercise and instruction, then you won’t have to experience these negative characteristics.
It’s best to consider the Papillon as a spunky, adventurous, and friendly dog. Do not think of him as a lap dog that would love to lay on the couch with your all day. Although he’ll lie on your lap, it’s definitely not the main reason why to get up early in the early morning. The Papillon loves running at full speed off-leash, and can even be a part of agility competitions.
